Overview
Fork Magazine combines cooking and gardening articles into one unique experience–a topsy turvy interaction. Consumers can read this magazine starting from either cover; one side starts the cooking section while the other cover starts the gardening section. Half of this magazine is upside down, depending on the way it’s being viewed, where the middle seam divides the two sections.
requirements

challenges
The most challenging part of this magazine was figuring out how the table of contents would function in a two-in-one magazine. Keeping each section of the magazine distinctive while cohesive with each other was also challenging.
solution
This magazine was designed in a way that rides the line between clean organization and avant-garde approach to stand out from the crowd. As for the table of contents, I designed it to be flipped at the seam so that it doesn’t confuse the readers on which side they are currently reading–if the consumer can read the gardening table of contents, that’s the section they are currently reading while the cooking section would be flipped. This design also allows for it to be printed for either side while keeping consistency.
process
Each article was designed one at a time while keeping a mindful eye to the overall design so that it functions together. The whole magazine was designed to have a sense of openness while having different elements be placed in unpredictable ways to keep the interest of the reader.
