Get under the covers
a branded campaign for the book cover to cover with chip kidd
Overview
This project included designing a book jacket about Chip Kidd, known for designing book jackets, using verbal-visual closure in addition to a branding system for the promotional event.
requirements
Book jacket
Promotional street banners
Branded collateral system
challenges
The biggest challenge with the book jacket was creating a design that encapsulates Chip Kidd and working out the assets needed to complete the design. I couldn’t find torn paper images online that suited my needs so I created and edited my own photos of torn paper.
solution
The color palette was chosen based on Chip Kidd’s attire and clothing. I approached this design through tactile means by ripping colored paper and photographing it; this gave a less sterile feeling to the overall design. Chip Kidd has designed many book covers and this book peels away all the layers of those covers through the torn paper design.
process
Before designing the cover, I explored different versions of the portrait through color tinting, line work, and silhouettes. After experimenting through digital means of creating the portraits and laying out the design, I decided to switch to analog methods of tearing paper which became a main element of the whole system to create a cohesive design.
Once the jacket was designed, I moved onto the street banners which I designed to function in a sequence as drivers pass by.
The collateral system includes stickers, bookmarkers, a coffee cup, and the mobile app which details the promotional event for the book. The colors, torn paper texture, and line art stayed consistent through each item to keep with the branding.
