My contribution: Accessible color design, color luminance testing, illustrations, and write copy.
Overview
Podio is a podcast mobile app with accessible design in mind. All the colors used have enough contrast that any type of color-blindness can easily use the app. Additionally, the typography is dyslexia friendly as well as legible for consumers with 20/70 vision.
requirements
Accessible design for color blindness, poor vision, and dyslexia.
challenges
The most challenging part of this app design was mathematically testing and trialing the colors to make sure they would be accessible to all types of color blindness.
solution
This app elevates the user experience by including features that were not offered in other podcast apps. Our app allows users to personalize their playlists, save podcasts to listen later, and search by duration of the podcast. On top of that, our app uses colors that will always have enough contrast regardless of the type of colorblindness a consumer might have; uses typography that is legible for those with dyslexia; and uses graphics or type that is large enough for those who are visually impaired.
process
The first step to this app design was to research other podcast apps and create a competitive analysis of both the UI and UX components. After finding user issues, our team set out to design solutions such as personalization of playlists or ability to search by duration. Colors and typography were chosen next to abide by accessibility guidelines for the vision impaired, color blindness, and users with dyslexia. Many tests for color contrast were performed for the true colors and then further tested for each type of color blindness. Additionally, I designed illustrations and icons that were accessible in both colors and imagery. All the genre icons are designed with stroke lines larger than 2px to be accessible towards those with vision impairment.
